How to hide private details in a screen recording

Cover sensitive details with timed solid redactions, check moving content and zooms, and understand which originals remain in an editable Kliper project.

A screen recording can expose more than the task you meant to demonstrate: an email address in a menu, a message notification, an account number, or a secret copied into a terminal. Check the recording before you send it.

In Kliper Studio, timed privacy layers can cover part of the picture. Use a solid redaction for sensitive text, treat blur as a visual effect, and review the exported video. Editing a visible detail does not remove it from your source recording or every copy of the project.

Remove avoidable private details before recording

Start with sample data whenever you can. Close unrelated tabs and message windows, hide notifications, and use an account prepared for the demonstration. A harmless example account is easier to review than a live customer screen with several moving private fields.

Record only the screen or window the task needs. If something sensitive appears, stop and make a fresh take when that is practical. This guide explains visual editing; it does not establish permission to record or share someone else's information.

Find every place the information appears

Watch the recording once before adding masks. Note where each sensitive detail enters and leaves the picture. Check menus, tooltips, browser bars, copied text, search history, and the screen after a dialog closes. An email address can appear in several places during the same task.

Listen too. A visual cover does not remove a spoken name or password. Change or remove the relevant audio separately, or record another take. Also review imported or generated captions and saved transcripts, because the words may repeat information you covered in the picture.

Add a solid redaction and set its time range

Open the recording in Studio and choose Privacy → Redaction. Position the rectangle over the detail in the preview, then adjust its size. Leave a little space around the text so anti-aliased edges or a slightly different frame do not remain visible.

Set the layer's start and end to cover the complete appearance, including the first and last visible frames. Play across both boundaries. A layer that starts just after a menu opens can expose the information briefly even if most of the section looks correct.

Use another timed layer when the detail appears elsewhere or at a separate moment. Keep each layer easy to inspect rather than relying on one very large rectangle that hides the whole demonstration.

Use solid coverage for secrets and blur for appearance

Solid redaction covers the selected region. Blur changes how the region looks; it should not be treated as a promise that sensitive text cannot be inferred. For a password, token, account number, or other secret, use a solid cover or remove the section.

If a real credential was exposed in a recording you already shared, covering a new copy does not revoke that credential or remove older copies. Follow the appropriate account or system process for changing it. Do not use a blur effect as a substitute for that work.

Check movement, scrolling, and animated zooms

Privacy masks stay in the framed picture; they do not automatically track an element as it scrolls or follow an animated zoom. Play the complete covered section with the final canvas and zoom settings. If the content moves out from under the rectangle, revise the layer timing and position, use separate sections, or remove that portion.

Check once more after changing clip speed, cutting a range, or adding a zoom. Look at the actual exported frames around the edit, not only a paused preview at the middle of the mask. Export a new copy first so you can review it without replacing your source.

Share the reviewed export and manage the originals separately

A .kliper project remains editable, and a collected-media project can include untrimmed original video, separate audio, and other assets. Sending that folder can expose material that the finished MP4 hides. If someone only needs the result, send the reviewed export and any caption file you intend to include.

Keep source backups under your control, and check cloud-synced folders or other copies separately. Removing a library entry, deleting a draft, or exporting a covered video does not mean every original has been erased. See the project backup guide and Kliper's privacy policy for the local-file distinction.

Before sharing, watch the final video from beginning to end with sound. Check text, captions, and the first and last frames of every redaction. That review is part of the edit, not an optional step after it.
