How to record a product demo with editable cursor zooms

Record full-screen pointer data in Kliper, generate editable focus zooms and click highlights, then review their timing before exporting a product demo.

A product demo should make the next action easy to follow. A zoom can help with a small menu or control, but following every pointer movement can also distract from the result you are explaining.

Kliper can save pointer data with new full-screen recordings and use it to create editable focus zooms and click highlights. Start with a short task, keep the original recording, and review where the camera moves before exporting.

Plan one task and prepare sample data

Pick a result the viewer should reach, such as inviting a teammate or exporting a report. Open the starting screen, prepare harmless sample details, and decide which clicks need explanation. You do not need to narrate every movement between controls.

Close unrelated windows and notifications. Test the microphone, and check computer sound separately if your Windows demo needs it. Make a short sample and listen before recording the complete walkthrough. The audio checklist explains those checks.

Use full-screen recording and save pointer movement

Choose a full-screen source and leave Save pointer movement enabled. Kliper saves coordinates and available click markers alongside the recording. This is extra recording data, not a new cursor painted over the video.

Pointer data is not added retroactively to an imported video, an older recording without the track, or a window capture. If Kliper cannot map the selected display safely, it can disable tracking while recording continues. Click availability also depends on platform permissions; on Mac, native click tracking needs granted accessibility access.

Run a short recording on the actual display you will use. Check that Studio offers Automatic focus for its clip before relying on that workflow for a long session.

Set the clip order, trims, and speed first

Open the recording in Studio. Remove setup time, arrange additional takes, and choose the playback speed. Keep enough time after a click for the viewer to see the resulting dialog, saved state, or confirmation.

Do major timing edits before creating the final click highlights. Zoom keyframes belong to clips, while generated highlights are timed layers. After substantial reordering or retiming, regenerate those highlights and inspect them again. An emphasis at the wrong time can be more confusing than no effect.

Generate focus and choose which movement to follow

Select a clip with a saved pointer track, then open Clips → Automatic focus. Choose Pointer movement or Clicks, set the zoom amount, and adjust Smooth movement. Turn Highlight clicks on only when click emphasis helps explain the task.

Select Apply automatic focus. If the clip already has zoom keyframes, explicitly choose Replace current zoom keyframes before applying a replacement. Kliper creates up to 36 editable focus keys and up to 60 click highlights, within the project's layer limits. Split a long clip if you need closer control over a section.

Use Preview clip, then inspect the generated keys and layers. Delete an unnecessary highlight or adjust a focus position when a menu or result needs more room. Automatic generation gives you an editable starting point, not a finished decision about what matters.

Reduce movement that competes with the explanation

Keep a wider view when the relationship between two areas matters. Zooming into a button can hide the panel that changes after it is pressed. Let the picture settle before the next important action, and use manual focus keys for a section that automatic movement does not explain well.

Smoothing affects the focus movement. It does not redraw or smooth a cursor already captured in the picture. A source without click markers can still contain movement samples; do not assume a missing click highlight means the entire recording is unusable.

Review captions, privacy layers, and the exported video

Add captions after the main timing is stable, and correct generated words against the narration. Check privacy layers with the final zoom: masks do not automatically follow moving screen content. The redaction guide covers that review.

Export a new MP4 and watch the complete task at normal speed. Confirm that each click highlight matches a real action and that zooms show the result, not just the pointer. Save the .kliper project with its media if you will revise or move it; collected projects include the pointer track and generated highlight assets.
